The Official Extinct Inline Thermostat Mod Thread
It's been a while since I've posted on this forum, but after three years, I finally decided to do this mod and add an aftermarket temp gauge. I feel like this was worth it.
I ordered the port up version because I wanted to install a sensor in the housing. Unfortunately, I can't get the set up to seat low enough, and in the process I ended up cracking a sensor connector (it's still usable though, just a crack in the plastic), so I plugged it and keep it as a burp outlet, though I didn't have to use it as such. On the upper radiator hose just above the fan, there is a slight kink in the hose, but it doesn't seem to bother the vehicle; I cut maybe 2 inches out of that hose and installed an inline Glowshift 32mm adaptor for the main digital readout. Since my Autometer provides two readouts, I installed a second sensor in the lower radiator hose in place of the ****** fitting the Extinct Inline mod kit came with. I also used the same Glowshift 32mm adaptor for that one, though I suspect the hose is either slightly larger or just worn, because I had to use two clamps. No leaks.
Since then, I've driven my '03 several times with both the Scangauge hooked up and the Autometer Cobalt Elite Digital dual readouts installed. Whereas before the mod, my Rover was typically showing a range from 205-215°F on the Scangauge, now on the same it ranges from 183-190. And on my Autometer it's anywhere from 183-191. They typically are in tune with one another.
In case anyone wished to know.

I suspect it is because of the way I had the hoses fitted. I did my best to get it to work out, but I just couldn't. There could also be something else going on I simply don't know about.
for some reasons I am unable to PM you, but if want to post which thermostat you think is most reliable I can replace it.
Just email me at info@ inlinethermostats.com with your order #
Just reporting back that I am seeing quite a difference after installing this kit! It's around 40 degrees(F) outside right now in NC most days.
Before the kit I was fluctuating from 185 - 212 ish.
After the kit (with 170 thermostat) I'm pretty much right around 170. 165 - 175, maybe a spike here and there above 180. When I purchased I got the 170 and 180. No codes in a 2001 so I think I will just leave the 170 as I'm sure I will want it during the summer.
Not really any issues with the install. From what I can tell so far bleeding is not an issue. I followed the instructions and no waterfall sound and heat is coming out of the vents. got the silicone gasket and recommend it for what it costs.
Only problem is wish I had installed this from the beginning, before replacing the factory 180
