'01 you don't have the CDL right?

If you have the funds, I'd really put in the CDL kit. Great excuse to do so.

You obviously use low range (or you wouldn't have had this post in the first place!) and a CDL would be a great performance boost over stock..

The early 01s have the CDL. So he'd have to get under there and check.

02-03 definitely don't have it.

Ah crap (again). This is why the land rover dealer quoted the mechanic $600 and he thought he'd have to re & re the centre console. The Rave Workshop manual (p560 - 41.20.43) shows it as a simple remove and replace part.

drowssap: don't know how to answer that first question, but I'd surely be interested if you found the cable! And I could see getting one made or making my own, but it looks like it's a fixed length so I'd need that spec - don't know what the shape of the old one is, and what info I'd get off it.

I think it's going to be a junkyard quest…

Oh, and I still haven't ruled out the centre lock. Spent time under there staring at it, I don't think it does but I still don't feel 100%. She did come with a Centre Lock shifter (in a box) so someone before me thought it was the early one.

Do you still have the CDL shifter that cam with the truck? That could be all you need to replace your broken shifter.

I've got that, but the mechanic (non-Land Rover mechanic, just the corner guy) told me the "cable broke".
I don't have a huge amount of faith in that, but for now I'll take his word for it.

I'd be overjoyed if it had the centre lock, would be worth tearing out the whole centre console. Plus would use up the extra shifter (and if not I should find someone else who can use it).
Still haven't found a way to be sure. Land Rover quotes different part numbers, but I can't find them on the unit.

Rave shows that the cable can be replaced from below.

Thanks again for your input (and hilarity)!

The link I posted before shows you how to tell if you have a CDL. And if you post pics of the CDL Shifter you have we can probly advise you there.

My guess is the previous owner figured out the truck has a CDL, bought either an aftermarket or D1 shifter to utilize the CDL, then never got around to installing it before deciding that, like all Discos, the truck was a maintenance nightmare he should pawn off on someone else.
