Default oh man, not good

so i think i have tracked down my oil leak to a front crankshaft seal, and from my understanding, this sucks... i have mechanics employed at the company where i work but i dont want to add to their already heavy workload... does anyone know approx. how much it would cost to have this replaced? i found the part and it only costs a few bucks, but i am sure the labor will kill me, also my diff lock light is on but i dont believe it is engaged, or its stuck, or i just have no idea what i'm doin(much more likely) its a 97 D1 and any help would be awesome, i will try to put some pictures up of my ride tomorrow or soon...

Which crank seal is leaking? The front or back?
As for the CDL, it should be all the way back and to the right, while in drive idleing along in a straight line try to move the lever.
Some times it will be disengaged but the CDL solenoid will stick, if that is the case try backing up several yards to "unwind" the t-case.

No big deal, I just had a shop change a front crank sealfor me. I paid $15 for the seal at the dealer. And $76. for labor. Avoid the dealer for labor they will charge alot. Go to a Small shop thatspecializes in rovers.MyD2 doesn't leak a drop now. I don't know about the CDL.

thanks for your help... i will check out the cdl whenever i get a little time today... also the front drivers wheel has a knock in it, when i hit small bumps and stuff in the road, i believe its my shock, and if that is the case then i see this as the perfect opportunity to put a small lift on it... i have heard that OME are pretty much the best for rovers, where is the best place to order one?

its the front seal... am i right to assume that everything has to be pulled off the front of my motor (ac compressor, alternator, water pump, other stuff) to gain access to this or is there a trick to it?

Well here is what I did with mine. I took RTV sealant and just gooped up the front seal on the outside. I went all the way around it and let it set up for 24 hours.
18 months later still no leaks.
But to fix it right I believe that all you need to do is remove the crank pully and the oil pan.
Somebody else will need to conferm this though.

Thats how I looked at it,"what do I have to lose?" already had a tube of RTV in the garage.
If it didnt work or started to leak again then replace the front seal. WQhich is what I'll do once it does start again. But until then, if it aint broke, dont fix it.

precisely... and as for the knock in the front wheel, im just lookin at that as a potential justification for a 2" lift...

You need not remove the oil pan to replace the front crank seal. Remove the fan, remove the fan shroud, remove the belt, remove the crank pulley bolt, remove the crank pulley, use a seal remover to remove the seal, replace the seal using the appropriate seal driver, install the crank pulley, install the crank pulley bolt and tighten to spec., install belt, install fan shroud, install fan, complete.
