Default oh snap

Trip ruined. Luckily, it happened 1000 feet from my garage. I stopped to reclose the rear hatch, drop it back in gear and the rest is obvious. So lucky it snapped when it wasn't even moving.

Now, for the cookie award, can anybody guess which part actually failed on it?

(rebuilt shaft, joints greased well, 30k on it)

actually the rear yoke snapped and it all came flying out.. now i dont know if that is a by product or the cause. once i have it unbolted ill examine. for now its back in the driveway and im going to use another vehicle and enjoy the trip.

yeah another few seconds i would have been hitting 60-70 on the main road. not even angry, nor frustrated. just surprised. new shaft is already ordered

Glad you are able to salvage your trip with your backup vehicle.

What'd you order? GBR? Tom Woods?

Since im back home now i had the chance to look at it (and fix it). The forward yoke on the DC joint failed on one end, where the 2nd ujoint mounts (2nd from the TC).

Yep, the actual metal snapped for some reason.

So watch for that as well i suppose. Figured id update it as it is a curious failure. At least i havent heard about that part breaking before.

So the u-joint isn't broken at all? I've seen on older 4x4 with u-joints in the front axle, instead of cv, that if the joint breaks, there is nothing the keep the yokes from smacking into each other, and then you break those off too.

joint likely failed after (the cotter pin thing came off and the cap popped) followed by the centering ball rolling around the pool parking lot.

the other side of the yoke mount is cracked, bent and gouged where the other end of the ujoint was still attached before popping out after it lost the other support hole.

at the speed and load it failed at, no way the yoke would have sheared clean off if the joint itself failed.

that's of course my unscientific accident report.
