Default Oil Change Question

Getting ready for the first oil change with my new to me 2004 Disco. Ive been changing my own oil since 1982. I read the owners manual and it suggested I first drain and replace the oil, then change the oil filter. Ive never done it this way, always draining the oil, then changing the oil filter. I then add 5 qrts, run it for a minute, then add the last qrt. Ive never had a problem. Have I been doing it wrong or is the Discovery engine different? I'm sure it does not really matter but can you tell me how you guys do it.
Thanks, Jim.

Do it the way you always have, only before installing the oil filter, fill it at least 2/3rds the way full with oil.
By the way what oil filter brand are you wanting to install?
