Default Oil and filter for 2004 Discovery in socal?

Hello,

I know there are threads that address this topic, but I thought it would be best if I asked about my specific case...thanks for the help.

I want to change the engine oil in my 2004 Disco...this will be the first time I do this on this vehicle...purchased it from someone earlier this year.

I hear a slight knocking when starting in the morning that goes away after a minute or so.

I want to use the best on the disco, so your selection and 'why' is appreciated.

Mobil 1 TDT 5w40 is pretty much the best over the counter oil you can buy for these trucks. If you have Redline 5w40 available that is great too. Mobil 1 301 filters are good too though the Napa Gold 51515 is good too for less money. If you Bosch Distance filters are supposed to be good too. Just get an any paper air filter.

Autozone Parts Stores have a sale right now, 5 quarts of Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1 oil filter $29, the EP version of Mobil 1 (extended protection) is $34. At that price it is worth buying 10 quarts and 2 oil filters (with the larger oil filter you will need closer to 6 quarts). They have the sale every 3 or 4 months. They also have a package deal where they will throw in an air filter for $2 off, however, they didn't have the correct air filter (Part No. 8295 if I recall correctly). Make sure that you pick up a new oil plug washer. All the best. Phil

(I just picked up 6 quarts of Mobil 1 5/30 and a M1 - 301 oil filter yesterday afternoon at the Autozone in Ocean Beach)

The 5w40 TDT is a better oil to get for our engines (IMO) than the regular or EP Mobil 1 flavors. The TDT has a better base stock and higher additive levels than the other M1's besides the racing oils and maybe Delvac 1. My truck sounds a lot quieter with a 40wt oil as opposed to a 30wt oil.

The slight knocking sound you hear is most likely not because of your oil it is your grade of fuel. Are you running high octane fuel only in your disco? The other threads pretty much say what needs to be said about the oil filter and oil you need. Hopefully this is some help

Cold valve train noise is actually quite common with these engines especially in the winter and is not an issue. My truck has some valve noise when cold. It goes away after a minute or so. Again this is normal and nothing to with fuel or even really an issue for a higher mileage flat tappet engine. If you have a tapping that does not go away after a couple minutes or starts when the engine is hot then it could be a number of things (generally not fuel related either). If your engine is generally just dirty then using a good HDEO (synthetic or conventional) is a good start.

I went with Shell Rotella HD-30 this last oil change and still use the NAPA oil filter.
My truck has never been happier, my oil light shuts off long before my SRS light when starting the truck in the morning.
Drove 2400 miles in 4 days and didnt use a drop of oil either.
She is nice and quiet, even when hot.

Ok, so I went with the k&n filter that was recommended in the guide book at autozone. I also went with mobil 1 high mileage 10w40 full synthetic.

How'd I do? I will monitor and make changes as necessary.

Questions: what is the reason for going with the longer oil filters, even though that's not what the 'recommended' filter is?

How often are you all changing oil and filter?

Some people believe that the longer filter does a better job at filtering because it has more filter media, I do not subscribe to this wifes tale.

Change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles and check your oil level once a week after the truck has sat all night, so check it like Sunday morning before you leave for church kinda thing.

The longer filter gives you a slightly larger oil volume. More oil can only help. Also note that the Mobil 1 oil filter and K&N are the same thing on the inside both made by champion labs. The Mobil 1 oil filter is cheaper though and available for a deal during the M1 oil change sales.
