Exclamation Oil lamp and ticking at 170k: Suggestions on where to start

2004 Disco 2 with 170k
Remanufactured engine with roughly 15-30k
Rotella 15w40 oil and v-power fuel always

Hello and Merry Christmas everyone. Today my oil light came/stays on followed by engine ticking and poor operation while engine is running. Also the rpms are running higher than normal while idling. Oil level is full. Coolant level is full. Serp belt shows signs of cracking but belt is still tight. Battery replaced about a year ago. Im not sure where to begin diagnostics. Cleared the codes to see what faults will pop up, however I dont want to start the engine again until I figure **** out. This comes less than a week before my trip to North Carolina where I plan on swapping over the engine to a rust free truck.

The following work done in 2016

- Remanufactured engine with tophat liners & performance camshaft
- machined cylinder heads
- new water pump
- new oil pump assembly & oil pump front cover
- all new gaskets/seals
- all new cooling hoses & thermostat
- new radiator
- new coolant expansion tank
- new plugs, wires, coil packs
- remanufactured fuel injectors
- new alternator

Oil light can illuminate for any number of reasons. Would the idle air control valve or the oil sender gauge be possible culprits? Where is the oil sender gauge located?

get a mechanical gauge and get pressure readings

The pulleys have never been replaced. Is it possible one of the pulleys is failing? The ticking almost sounds like a bad bearing in one of the pulleys but I cant be certain.

I hope this doesn’t turn out to be as bad as it sounds.

Maybe Santa came early and dropped a sweet diesel in there.

I hope not, but it sounds like the oil pump. IF this truck is up to op temp touch the oil filter, my guess is it's ice cold. And a bad pulley won't make the oil light turn on especially at those RPMs. You asked were the oil pressure switch/sender is have a look at the pic

Gonna pick up a oil pressure tester locally on Tuesday. If the oil filter is ice cold is this an indication of a bad oil pump?

It can be, I just did a 2001 on Friday with a bad pump. First thing I checked was the filter and it was cold.
A test with a gauge then confirmed low oil pressure. The oil pump gear was cracked.

You definitely have an oil pressure issue based on ticking. The ticking can be caused by the pump failing and not getting enough pressure to the top end or could be caused by a walked cam bearing not allowing the pressure to reach the top.

To rule out cam bearing you can drop the pan and get a look at them from underneath. Next step is front cover, pan needs to come off for that to come off anyways.

Bummer.

Started the engine and let it warm up to around operating temp range. Check engine light started flashing and 3 new codes: P1300, P0301 & P0305. Touched the oil filter and its mostly cool. The metal part that the filter screws into is warm. The cats are not glowing.
