Default Oil leak at timing chain cover...

Just bought a 99 Discovery II. Had it checked out before I bought it and was told of a leak at the timing chain cover. I figured this would be something that I can live with for a while since it is not very bad. Is my initial thought correct or should I dive into this ASAP?

It's a simple fix.

Thanks Bundu. Will I need to remove all of the accesories off the front of the engine?

No, I will point you to the service manual download rather than try to explain what needs to be done. The fan needs to come off, but you can work around most other things.
Download from here http://www.landroverresource.com/
Look for Land Rover RAVE Service Manual.

Ok, got the Rave manual. Looked up the steps and have a question.

Do I already have the tool specified in step 3 (see below)? Is it (should it be) located on the cover itself? Please forgive all of the noob questions.

3. Locate tool LRT-12-090 on timing cover and oil
pump drive gear.

Resurrecting this thread because I'm fairly certain I have a leak coming from the timing cover gasket and have the same unanswered question this gent had a decade ago.

I don't understand the question. Leaks from the front cover are typically due to the front seal, assuming you have the PCV mod. Rarely does the gasket leak.

If you (or the OP) are asking if you need that tool, no. “Locate” means place the tool on the cover, not find something that is part of the cover already. It’s used to center and rotate the oil pump gear so it mates with the key on the crank. Just eyeball it and work it on as you install the cover.

Perfect, that’s the answer I was looking for!
