I have a 2003 disco 2 with 111k is it common for oil leaks? anyone know anyone in the north east pa area that would be good to rebuild a 4.6 engine? thanks Rob

Where is it leaking from?

 

lol i guess that answers my first question. Looks like its leakin from the bottom of the oil pan and near the transmission case. But im no mechanic im a baker.

 

Bottom of the oil pan could be anything. Look from the top down. Valve cover gaskets are notorious. So is the timing cover. Rear mains are leakers as well. Basically if it has fluid.. it will eventually leak wherever there is a gasket.

 

Ok so bottom line is just check the oil so often and as long as it isnt real bad its common at my mileage? Thanks for all the help guys. This forum is great.. Rob

its a land rover, they have a tendancy to leak anything liquid. just keep an eye on it. if you are losing excessive amounts, you need to look into getting the leaky gaskets replaced.

 

Could be leaking from a number of places and running down on the oil pan. A few common places to check would be valve cover gaskets first. Snug them down they get loose regularly and run down the engine to the oil pan. Another common leak would be around the oil filter and will also blow back onto the oil pan, check to see if needs snugging up. Also on an 03 D2 are the plugs where the oil cooler lines would have been, near the front of the engine. 03 didn't have an oil cooler and LR plugged off the holes. The screw in plugs will work loose with time and oil will blow back onto your oil pan and your transmission pan and if you let it leak long enough and go fast enough will even show up all the way on the back bumper. If these plugs were left unchecked and backed all the way out while driving it would be catastrophic to your engine and they do get loose.
One of the plugs is right near the oil filter and easy to get to if you no longer have the plastic/fiberglass brush pan underneath the front of the engine. If you do have the pan, you can still reach the front plug through the oil filter access hole. The other plug is not too hard to get to but you may have to remove the pan or come in from the top for that one. Don't over tighten them, just snug them up if they are loose.
As far as small shops/mechanics go, ask around and do your research for good reputable shops in your area that can work on rovers and have good feedback from rover owners before you pick one, since some shops will rip you off big time. Some just don't know how to work on rovers and some will try to tell you that you need all kinds of stuff that you don't even need. Also, stay away from dealerships, they will rob you blind with parts and labor for any little thing. Look around on here for a free download of the RAVE manual which will help you get to know your truck better and will save you a bundle on small DIY easy to fix things that you would otherwise pay big bucks to get fixed.
