Oil Light.
GM guys. Newbie here. I have owned my 01D2(93K miles)for about 18 mos and I love it. I have had my local mechanic work on it several times. The latest time was about a week ago. Service engine light came on. Mechanic told me it was the water pump(replaced 6 mos earlier), after removing he then decided it was a leaky gasket. Since he replace this gasket the light is no longer coming on. Now the oil light comes on when the idle speed is 1000 rpms or less. Mechanic says it will be needing a new oil pump soon. What are your thoughts on this? BTW,I have decided to take the plunge and begin doing all of the maintenance I am capable of. Never considered myself a mechanic but I figure with the wealth of knowledge on this board I can tackle the smaller things.

Wow, your mechanic is a a$$, the water pump will not set off the check engine or service engine light's.
SO it sounds like he did work that didnt need to be done so he could make his boat payment and then rest the light hoping that it wouldnt come back on.
As for the oil light, go somewhere else and have the oil pressure tested.
And kudo's for wanting to start doing maintence yourself, you will save alot of money this way.
