While driving down the road a pop sound came and then the oil light came on, drove it about 2 to 3 miles slowly, then it stopped. It was ticking alittle louder, making me think it's the oil pump.

Just an FYI, when the oil light comes on, turn off the engine. Driving 2-3 miles is bad. The pop could have been something minor (relatively) but driving it until it stops, you probably need an engine now.

 

The pop sound must have been the **** hitting the fan.

did the motor stop, or the light "stopped" as in turned off?

oil light means low pressure, which means either oil pump failure, catastrophic oil leak, oil line block, or low fluid.

ANY of these circumstances, you should IMMEDIATLY turn off the motor as soon as you safly get the car stopped to check.

if its just low level in the case, from a small leak perhaps over a few weeks, then fill her up and drive home.

you might have gotten lucky, and no damage was done, or even more lucky, and the oil level or pressure sensor is faulty and it was just an electrical glitch.

but if it was accompanied by a ticking noise that only got louder along with the light, there was definatly something causing it, not an electrical issue. todays oils are great, especially synthetics at maintaining some lubrication without flow, but its very short term, and almost nonexistant on combustion chambers and main bearings. you could have worn in a few extra years of normal wear n tear by just those few miles.

on the other hand, if it "stopped" like, the engine stopped running? be prepared for some very bad news, without oil the piston rings would have dry metal/metal contact with the cylinder walls and just completely ruined your compression, been unseated, or stuck in place. or if the bearings went dry, the whole bottom end will need a rebuild. either way, its not going to be cheap, and youll probably better off finding a used motor or entire new rover... they are almost as cheap as just the motor now haha.



BUT, before you go towing it to a mechanic,

steps now are to:

check the oil level!

if oil level is good, smile... have it brought over to a mechanic to diagnos sensor failure. if you are lucky, thats all it is. if sensors good and oil levels good, next check the oil lines, look for leaks/cracks etc, then move on to diag an oil pump failure.

ps none of those codes would cause an oil light to come on... but we are talking about land rover so you could roll the windows down and the airbags go off haha.

 

Had my oil light coming on at an idle while stopped in drive, would flicker and then go off, was having problems for a week, turned out to be a oil pressure switch.

Ok, I drove it about 1/2 a mile and not 2 or 3 to pull over. No leaking of any type. I't a 04 w/ 108. Pulled off the road, turned off, let sit 15 min while I looked over everything. Started it up and check engine light and oil light went off and back on. Then at idle for a short period of time shut down. I checked for leaks and none. Oil level full. No overheating @ all. Towed to Rover.
