Default Oil light scare

My D1 runs smooth and uses no oil at all between oil changes and the color is always "clean" oil. So I am on my way home tonight and the oil light started flashing on and off. I pulled over and flipped the hood open and at idle I could hear what I would describe as sounding like a "tappet" or ticking valve noise from the top end. I turned off the motor and checked the oil level which was just fine.

When I restarted the motor there was no longer any noise and no more light for the rest of the way home!

I am happy that I do not seem to have blown anything but scared stiff as to what may be coming next! Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

Thanks,
Alan

That noise probably was a deflated lifter/s due to the low pressure. Get an oil pressure gauge and see what the pressure is.

Thanks. Where does the oil pressure guage screw into?
What could have caused a temporary pressure drop? An oil pump going bad?

There is a fitting above the oil filter you can tap into.
To get a good reading, test with the engine stone cold at idle and at 2000 RPM's and when warm at idle and at 2000 RPM's.
Get back to us with your numbers.
There have been some pumps that have started cracking causing oil pressure issues, noise and failures so don't put this off.

a gauge can be adapted to screw into where the oil pressure sender mounts in the engine frt cover, many things could cause a TEMPORARY oil pressure drop.....something could be floating around in the oil pan and have blocked the oil pickup tube, or any other oil passage. When was the last oil change? and make sure you use a GOOD filter.
