Oil light on when idle down, yes it's an 03 quick question
Oil light is coming on after idles down, I know I'm posting on what has been questioned a ton on here, but was needing some advice.
Hi! I'm not a new member actually joined in 06, but haven't been on in a long time, so new handle. So here is my question, I've owned several discoveries and 2 03 discovery's anyway the one I have kept is an 03 discovery se with 123000 miles and yes it is in the vin range. It runs great but after it idles down and not moving the oil light flickers. So I am assuming that maybe some teeth on the oil pump gears maybe worn or broken. I have already purchased new oil pump gears, and gaskets from Atlantic British. Oh and a water pump since it will have to be removed anyway, actually got the pump on eBay. Anyway anything else I need to look at and do while I'm changing this? And what does it mean by priming oil pump? It's not an actual pump it's just gears that are being replaced, that pulls the oil( not like a whole mechanical part like a power steering pump). So how or what do I do there. Any advice is welcomed and any mechanical diagrams are greatly appreciated. Also if disco mike would send me an email I've got a few questions on my rover for him bsgray11@gmail thanks a ton, also need to know best place to get a reman power steering pump( best deal)

Yes will use some lock tight glad you mentioned it or I might have forgot. Getting everything in before I start. Decided to order valve cover gaskets since the valve covers leak. Going to order spark plugs and wires, and a plenum gasket since I'll have to remove intake. Been cold here in tupelo, Mississippi so I'm going to wait till next week. So what is priming the oil pump? Does that just mean lubricating the crap out of the gears? Or is it what you do once you put the cover on?
Crap meant to ask what is normal for oil pressure psi when I hook my guage up? I've seen alo of way different numbers on line. I have my manuals checked you link out, don't suppose there is one with a diagram of what I'm about to do is there
Just went through a long process with my PS pump. They can usually be rebuilt with a $28 gasket and seal kit, but be very careful when putting it back together. The ears on the back cover are easy to snap. A Cardone reman is available through PartsGeek and Advance Auto, and Autozone offers one as well. The remans run around $200 to $230. After breaking my rear cover while trying to rebuild the pump I installed 2 Autozone ones before I gave up and bought a new one through Rovers North. I found it elsewhere for less but they matched the price. This pump is quiet and dry. Should have bought it in the first place.
Ok, how much was the one from rover north, was the ones you received from autozone not good? Mine leaks and the power steering doesn't work even when u put fluid in and it screeches and squeals I am assuming that's the pump. I've never had to replace a pump on any vehicle I've owned. So is that a bad pump?
Sounds like the pump. They typically leak from the rear cover but still work so yours may be the line also. I had no luck with the Autozone pumps. The first one I got from them wasn't even a pump from a Discovery. It was another pump that was very similar but had the original mounting lugs cut off and new ones welded on so it would bolt into the D2 mount. It wasn't properly aligned so the belt squealed and it also leaked out the front seal. The second one was the correct pump but it was noisy. The issue is with their rebuilder in Mexico.
The one I got from RN was an Allmakes pump from the UK. They are sold by others so look for the best price. I buy a decent amount of stuff from RN so I asked if they would match a lower price I found elsewhere and they did. Here's the same pump for $295 which is a smokin' deal: LAND ROVER STEERING PUMP DISCOVERY 2 II 99-04 ALL MAKES NEW | Miami British
Atlantic British sells the same pump so if you are buying gaskets and gears from them they should match that price also.

Yeah I guess I might as well do that too, I've put many timing belts on camrys and a few on Hondas. Never put a chain on, I've been trying to find diagrams online to see how the line marks are before I actually get started with the whole process, definetly glad to be getting all the input. Still haven't found what people mean by priming the oil pump yet. Really want to know that.lol don't want a dry start!
For your PSI readings the RAVE has that on page 68 of 1529 in the shop manual, 10 PSI minimum and 50 PSI at 2000 rpm hot. You will notice cold pressure is much higher at idle, it drops as oil warms up. Cold and thick it bypasses the filter medium in the oil filter.
