Default Oil overfill leak?

So, I was dumb and didn’t do my due diligence of checking the oil on our new to us disco before driving home 600mi. I felt comfortable as the owner had just had the entire engine resealed 3k miles ago by a professional shop.

Well fast forward 4 days I notice a couple drops of oil. Check the oil level and it’s a 1/2” over full.

Could the overfill have cause too high of pressure and prematurely worn out the seals? Or is this just rover life, the leaks find their way

The shop also stated they used plain old m1 5w30. Planning to switch over to Disco mikes recommendation of m1 high mileage 10w40. Truck currently has 109k

the old saying goes, "if it's not leaking, it's empty". these Discovery engines are known for oil leaks.

that being said, i would change out the oil to a 10w40 or a 15w40. 5w30 is too thin for these engines.

take a look at the Stickies at the top of the home page and do the PCV mod. this will take care of the a lot of the oil leaks.

Over filled oil does not cause high pressure, and does not tax seals. It could cause the crank to dip into the oil, causing splash (could lead to cylinder glazing) and foaming, reduced MPG.

If you don't do the PCV mod, at least make sure the oil baffle for the valve cover crankcase vent is not plugged. If this is plugged, excess pressure can build up on certain oil seals and cause leaks.

I really like M1 10w40 High Mileage in my Discovery. IMO, its the best oil that I've run in the 75k miles that I've owned this truck. And, yes, I had a shop way over fill the oil and it leaked onto the crank position sensor which caused the expected problems until I cleaned (sprayed the daylights out of it) the connection with electrical contact spray.

There's a sticky listed above, with the procedure. Click link below.
