Default at millage should I switch to high milage synthetic oil?

I hit the 65k mark on my odometer and I am wondering when I should switch to highmilage synthetic. I was picking up a quart the other day and I bought 10-40w mobile one synthetic. I also saw the same oil in high milage formula. What is the difference between the two? Is it safe to put high milage oil in when I have not hit the 75-80k mile mark?

The high milage oil has extra additives to expand leaky seals. Maybe it coats parts a little more, but that is just a guess. I know it expands seals, because it slowed down a few oil leaks I had from the mainseal, oil pan gasket. I have been using Mobil 1 10w-40 since 65,000 now to 94,000

hey thanks for the reply. I used high milage last night because I had been recently losing some oil pressure and took a look and it turned out most of the oil had been burned up. I was essentially running on oil fumes whoops. Luckily I bought a quart for just today to tide the truck over. Tomorrow I am getting a full change done tomorrow by the dealership. Thanks again. From now on I am going to purchase high milage.

You might want to consider doing your own oil changes. It helps to keep you better in-tune with how your Rover is running. Checking the coolant, power steering fluids, brake fluids at a regular interval is essential for these trucks. I check my oil at least twice during a 5000 mile oil change interval. Its never below the lowerst tic mark but I like to keep an eye on it.

Yikes!!! Be careful with that, these engines already don't oil themselves very well, I hear the oil passages just aren't big enough basically. Also they like to leak. The owners manual suggests checking the oil every 250 miles... probably not a bad idea, that's what I've done since I bought mine. Oddly enough, sometimes it's about a half quart low other times, at the same milage, it's right at the top. Who know's, but always worth giving it a check at least once a week.

I would recommend switching to Rotella 5W40 synthetic now. It is arguably the best synthetic out there for trucks. Synthetics will always outlast dino oil and are far more resistant to shear. Furthermore, since Rotella was originally designed for diesels, it contains more detergents.

I would agree with the Rotella and make sure to use a large filter like a Mobil 1-301.
Why are you paying the big bucks to have the dealer screw you over, do the oil change your self, besides, you also need to find out what happened to the rest of your oil.

Check your oil once a week.
Every Sat morning before you drive anywhere just pop the hood and pull out the dipstick.
Do that to all of your cars.
Once a week.
I check ours every Sun before church.
It will take you all of 30 seconds, you dont even need to prop the hood up, just hold it with one hand and pull the dipstick out with the other.
