Default Oil Pressure Too High?

Hi guys,

I'm continuing to get to know the new (to me) disco. I got the oil pressure gauge wired up today and had a startling discovery... Oil pressure at startup to 180 degrees remains at 80 psi (the max of my sending unit so who knows what it really is). Any ideas what could be causing this? It does have the dreaded "tap" which I think is a slipped sleeve. But I'm more concerned with why the oil pressure is so high...

Sounds like a gauge problem for it to be that high constantly. I would recheck all the wiring and grounds, and then last effort I would get a manual read done. I'm having higher oil psi too, maybe it's in the air around here. What part of Bham are you in? Nice rig, BTW.

It won't really be 80 psi, the relief valve vents just above 50. Suggest re-test with a mechanical gauge attached where the oil pressure warning switch hooks up.

A number of people have had oil pressure issues with after market gauges. I would call your supplier and see what they suggest. I have seen some bad new gauges also if you don't use the right gauge wire this can cause a problem.

Thanks guys. Luckily, I had a spare electronic sending unit laying around from the install on my other disco. Turns out the one I purchased was bad. I slapped it on and pressures are 49 cold idle down to around 14 warm. Not bad. What a relief! Thanks for the help. I can't wait to get the new disco up and running!
