Default Oil Pressure Warning Light

Hey all, hope that you are having a great New Year! It has finally started raining here in Southern California. While driving the Discovery I this afternoon, in and around a lot of standing water, the Oil Pressure Warning Light came on. I shut it down, checked the oil level, full (I changed the oil a week ago with Mobil ! 5/30 Truck and SUV formula. I also used the Mobil 1 Oil filter recommended by Mike 1301 iirc, not the one listed on the Mobil guide 1204). It seems to be running great. Anyway to check the pressure without hooking up a gauge? Could this be a short, causing the warning light to come on? Other than low fluid level or nonworking oil pump, is there anything else that will set off the Oil Pressure Light? When I tried to restart the car, it started right up the light initially was not on but after ten seconds or so it came on lightly at first, flickering and then came on full. It is pouring right now so I am not to eager to get wet. Any ideas?

1999 Discovery I 102k miles

thanks Phil

Sounds like you are loosing the pump. The sending unit is just a switch. Pop it out and hook up a gauge.

Does the light just do this at idle, or does it go away if you raise the RPM..

I went out this morning, a chilly 52 degrees! Checked for leaks, oil level, wiggled the lead to the oil pressure sender and made sure it was tight, it was. Started up the truck, no odd noises and no light. Let it idle for a few minutes and drove it around for about ten minutes, no light, runs great. Could it have been that something got wet from the splashing water during the rain storm? I will check the pressure. Is the oil pump something that can be an intermittent problem or does it fail and stay failed? thanks Phil

usually fails and it is done. there could have been added resistance on the wire from getting wet...it is possible.

We were actually 51 this morning...weird after being close to 0 the Friday before.
