I had the same symptoms and diagnosis with my 2003 just under 70k. They replaced the rockers and lifters and it kept coming back. It seemed to increase as the engine warmed. My dealer did not use the word "soft" but after speaking to national service finally determined the camshaft was worn and sloppy. Ultimately, the fix was a new short block, which took care of it. Is is possible that is what they quoted you? I feel for you. Good luck.
