Default RE: Oil Pump Failure

ORIGINAL: dvekns

I just discovered that my LR is within the Vin Range and showing all the classic symptoms. I called my local dealer here in NJ and was told that it's just a bulletin and they don't have to do anything for me. Doesn't mean there have been many failures and if there had been they would put a recall out. Not to sure what too do now. Feel like I'm on the titanic. Is there anyone that can lend me some advice or help?
Your dealer is right, there is a TSB (technical service bulletin) which just tells the dealers that there is a known problem but NOT a recall.
There are no less than 40,000 '03's on the road with this known problem.
If you are showing the classic signs of oil pump failer like you said then you can replace the front cover and oil pump and that will buy you another however many miles you have on your truck now.
So if you currently have 52,000 miles, replace the oil pump and front engine cover and you will then need to replace it again in 50,000 miles.
The only perminent fix is a new engine.

It stands for Light Truck.
You will also find it on tires, "LT" for light truck tires and "P" for passenger car tires.

Hi - Just wondering if anyone has had any luck with Land Rover in dealing with this issue on a 2004 model. I was driving ours on a busy LAfreeway with my 9-month-old baby when the oil light came on and the engine completely shut down on me. I was lucky to be able to pull off to the side of road before it completely stopped. It has now been sitting at the LR dealership for about 2 months. I just got off a conference call with the general mgr. and the service mgr. The lovely general manager basically yelled at me for 20 minutes sraight, threatening me with "If you don't get the vehicle out of here, we will find an alternative and get it out of here ourselves!" A few days ago, I was told that the oil pump failed, and that I owe them $2200 for the diagnosis, plus $3000 to fix it. I called them this afternoon with the technical bulletin information, and informed them that I know all about this problem, their story changed to "We don't know the problem, we need you to authorize us to look further." So basically, they want me to tow the vehicle, which will not even START, and pay them $2200 for the pleasure. Of course, customer service has gone out the window now that I'm 2,000 milesover thewarranty.

Call a lawyer, they are trying to screw you over.
There is no way it cost $2200 for a diagnoises, and it will cost $7000 to fix, you need a new engine.
Also call your local Better Business Bureau and report this dealer to them.
Also call Land Rover North America and let them know how you have been treated.
Sorry to hear about your bad luck.

Thanks - I think that's my only option, I don't want to give in and give them the $2200 and tow it. But they are threatening me with all kinds of storage fees, and I think they can try to say I'm abandoning it.

Does anyone know where to find a copy of the actual Technical Bulletin? All I'm finding is the text of it, the link to it is dead.

TECHNICAL ALERT
March 14, 2003 TA03 1201
NAS US Only Cda Only
ATTENTION: Service Manager Service Advisor Technician
X
2003 Discovery Series II Oil Pump Failures
Vehicles Affected
Discovery Series II (LT) 3A771801 – 3A808362
Situation
Oil pump failures on 2003 Discovery Series II vehicles may be the result of a
manufacturing error. Locating dowel pins may be slightly misaligned permitting
assembly of the oil pump to the engine block, but placing stress on the pump housing
which can ultimately lead to leakage or failure.
Resolution
Whenever an oil pump failure is encountered on vehicles within the above VIN range
the
only effective repair currently available is replacement of the complete engine
assembly including the front cover/oil pump manufactured to the latest tolerances.
Use the following components to affect a repair:
•
LBB112301 4.6 Engine assembly LEV

•
LBB111461 4.6 Engine assembly NON-LEV

Call the dealer and tell them that you need a week to get the money together, in the mean time call a lawyer.

This only affects 2003's and a very small number of 2004's.
