Oil Pump Problems - not only an 03 issue
Mine is an 04 and one can ready about my recent history here -
https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...w-truck-54494/
From the rebuilder -
"Here's the explanation on the the failure in your engine: oil pump gave away (you can see the pieces of it that are in the bottom of the pan) and then luckliy, the timing chain broke which is more than likely what poked the hole in your timing cover. I say luckliy because if the chain hadn't broken the engine could have continued to run without oil which could have resulted in the engine locking up."
Disheartening to say the least. 45k on a Disco that has lead a calm, sheltered, properly maintained life and the maintenance was all done by Land Rover (minus the last oil change).

What? Your timing chain broke and your engine didn't eat valves? DUH!!!
Sorry, not intended for you Lawndart, it is intended for those who think you must change the timing chain every other oil change or the world will explode in a big ball of fire.
All of the late Bosch 4.6 engines are prone to the oil pump problem, the GEMS 4.6's are not, its just the newer ones, and it sucks.
I feel for you man, at least you can get her back on the road for fairly cheap.

Ahh, 8k cheap when said and done. When the purchase price is tallied, less than a year ago, on a premium truck with less than 38k I'll be in it for around 20k. Good price for a nine year old RTW vehicle that can fail without warning on the lush highways of middle America!!
Currently riding motorcycles and bought a 67 Ford F100 for when it is really ugly outside; umpteen miles north of 200k and prior to my ownership, maintained by hillbillies for who knows how long. Hasn't failed me yet...
Feel I have the right to vent a bit.

I'm confused. If the crank keeps turning and the camshaft doesn't, won't the open valves hit the piston? I've never had an engine quit at highway speeds with the vehicle in gear, but doesn't it continue to rotate the crank for a little while?

Not all overhead cam engines have timing belts, some have timing chains, most Nissan's and Kia/Hyundai's have timing chains.
I had a Ford Escort that the timing belt broke and it ate 3 valves, replaced those valves and the timing belt and back on the road.
Most of the time if your timing belt breaks your engine is toast, the valves can punch holes in the piston, so if you have a car with a timing belt make damn sure you change it as scheduled.
Timing chains are life time parts, they last as long as the engine and never need to be replaced.
