There is a dimensional inspection on the gears. I believe it is max .005 inch. The gears do wear as you have metal to metal contact. Looking at them will only tell if they are cracked. I don't know the clearance on a new set as I bought a new front cover so I didn't need to replace.

Hey , you can download the engine overhaul manual from here,,,

http://www.landroverresource.com/40_46_V8_overhaul.pdf

and in the page 21, 22...are the correct dimensions of the pump gears...

by the way... I going to change the gears of my 01 Discovery's oil pump... but have a question... does the gears have and specific position or just has to drop it in and go..??

thanks....

The outer gear has a slight difference in sides. One side is flat and one has a slight angle cut. I believe the Angled side faces the front of the vehicle. Oil Pump Repair Kit?-100_2022.jpg
The inner gear has no difference that I could see. When you go to put the cover back on, you have to line up the Woodruff key and that will position the gears. Be sure to use new oil to lube everything. I have some pictures and information on what I did in a thread on here. You might want to skip through to page 6 where the oil pump post is. Search "Doing a major 100k service".

I'm just south of San Antonio in Floresville. Have you been to any good trails in South Texas?

If you get the gears from AB then there is no up and down side. If they are factory landrover then the chamfered side faces into the cover. I smeared grease on the gears and dumped some gear oil in before installing the cover plate. Then fill oil filter as full of oil as you can get it, install and then pull fuel pump and injector fuses and crank for 30 sec. Re-install fuses and the oil light should go out in 5 sec or less.

I ordered my oil pump kit from AtlanticBritish and it was just like the old gears(1 flat side and 1 chamfered side). I would recommend checking your new gears as soon as they come in. If they have a flat and chamfered side then pay close attention to the way the old gears are in the pump before removing and be sure they go in the same way.

I haven't been on the beach in South Padre but I have hit some fishing spots in Port Aransas, Rockport and Corpus Christi. I'm thinking of taking another trip in May. How was the fishing down there?

I e-mailed the manufacturer of the gears Atlantic british sells and they replied that their gears are the same on both sides. I also, could distinguish no visual difference between the side. These are the EAC parts of england.

These are the gears I got from AB. They are also EAC parts of england and you can clearly see from the picture that one side is Chamfered just like the old gears.

Marizcal, If you ordered from AB can you please look at the outer gear closely and see if one side is flush and the other chamfered to clear this up????

I may be wrong about all of this but I just did the oil pump 2 weeks ago and I am almost 100% certain that the new gears have 2 different sides. CLICK ON THE PIC AND ZOOM IN WITH YOUR BROWSER TO GET A CLOSE UP LOOK!

Your right that outer edge does have a bevel, I also just looked at my old set and its the same way. I just know I e-mailed eac and they said it did not matter which way they went in. So, now I have no idea which way I installed them. Its been about 1500 miles since I installed them and its pumping fine so I guess I got them right?
Also, those dont look like original gears, land rover original gears should have an arrow pointer imprint on the inner gear, non beveled side. This was for factory installation alignment on the assembly line. It could be covered up with that big red arrow in the picture, if not then your gears may have been changed in the past.
