Default oil questions- acceptable burn rate and mileage

I went 1 year and 7500 miles between changes- from 67k to 74.5k- on Castrol Syntec and a mobil 1 204 filter.
I stuipidly had forgotten my last oil change mileage, otherwise I would have changed the oil a few months back at 5k as posts here recommend- for full synthetic.
Does the time between changes not matter, is it all in the mileage- or a little of both as quick lube joints imply?
What alerted me to the need for change was developing engine noise at cold start. Over the last month or so I noticed metallic rapping sounds and an abnormal amount of piston knock until warm.
During the oil change yesterday I noticed I was about a quart low and that the oil was good and black. Now I'm guessing all oils are black after thousands of miles, or should it have still been a little amber colored?
Is it true that newer "super" synthetic oils- like Mobil 1 EP and others- can allow you to go 10k+ between oil changes?
Most important- is 1 quart an acceptable amount of burn after 1 year and 7500 miles?

More so mileage than time. I would change the oil at least once year if it is never driven. Rover engines dilute the oil with fuel pretty well, so even with synthetic I wouldn't go past 7500. To answer your question, yes, Mobil EP oil can last 10000+ miles. Not sure about the consumption. I always change my oil every 3000-5000 miles. Maybe some else can help out.

If you really want to see if you can go 10000+ miles, put oil in the engine and drive it until 7500 then take an oil sample and send it into a lab. The results will show how much fuel and TBN (active additives) are in the oil. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/free_test_kit.html

When using a full synthetic mileage is the judge not time, full syns dont break down like dino oil does.
Even Mobil 1 EP says to change it once a year or 15,000 miles, whichever is sooner.
My cousins E300 has the oil life monitor, it came with M1 0w-40 from the factory, 22,000 miles and 1.5 years later he got his first oil change. ($225 I might add)
LR recommends once a year or every 7500 miles, whichever is sooner.
Change it every 5000 miles, its easy to remember, whenever there is a "5" or a "0" third place from the left change the oil, no need to worry about the "100's"
Yes 1 quart every 7500 miles is fine, they do not consider it to be a problem unless you are using more than 1 qt every 1000 miles.
I use ~1 qt every 5000 miles.

I zoned out after the first paragraph but it is some good reading.

With synthetic fluids you change every 5000, not 7500 and not yearly or you will carbon up your engine.
Consider doing an ATF flush and get rid of some of your old build up, then usee either a Mobil1-301 or a K&N 3001 filter.
