The RAVE manual shows what grade oil for each climate. For my climate 5w40 year round works best. I'm running Amsoil 5w40 Euro. Amsoil says it can go a full year between changes but you need to get an oil analisis done around 4K miles of use to make sure everything is ok. Otherwise it may require more frequent changes. As long as the oil in my D2 tests ok I'm just going to change the filter a few times a year and keep the oil topped off.

You will get 15 different opinions is my guess M1 0W-40 is what is recommended on the M1 site, and going by the book (which was made before 0w40 was available) it says 5W40. I'm a M1 fan overall, and it has never let me down on many cars. If my engine was new, I would be running 0w40 for start up protection as well as overall heat protection. In the hot months, you could go to 5W40 or 10w40.

It depends on the ambient temperature, also if the engine has sludge or not and the oil pressure.

Sludged up engines would better with the thinner oils to prevent lifter noise.

In extremely cold temperatures 5W20 is what I have used to allow cold startup.

In CLT NC climate I use 5 W 30 in the winter and 5 W 40 rotella in the summer on the 04. On the others with the 4.0 L I use 15 W 40 and on the 2000 DII with sludge, I use 5w30 to keep the lifters quiet.

I use Mobile 1 10w40 high mileage synthetic.

Like Bundu said, get the oil at Wal-Mart. They sell it in 5 quart jugs, LOTS cheaper than the single quart the local auto parts store sell it as.
