The ECU-engine control unit is a plug-N-play
The BCU-body control unit needs to match the truck, it is what controls your windows, door locks, alarm, etc.
The TCU-transmission control unit (DII's) controls the transmission, again plug-N-play

I agree that ECU and ECM are interchangeable, unit to module.

So assuming that a new ECU is good, just plug it in and go.

Interesting. I've never replaced one (so what do I know?), but Land Rover says the DII ECM needs to be reprogrammed when replaced.

"If you have to replace the Engine Control Module (ECM, or sometimes called the Engine ECU), it has to be reprogrammed to accept the correct remobilizationn code form the BeCM. Steve Norman, who runs an independent shop and has a TestBook/T4, reports that he has done this quite frequently. If you fit a new engine ECU (new or used) you can use T4 to match the immobilization signal into the engine ECU. THus you can have more than one "matched" engine ECU to a vehicle. So, once matched to the vehicle, you can swap ECU's without re-matching."

This was taken from rangerovers.net. I actually am hoping the Spike is right. I believe I need a new ECU and would love to do it myself. I am a bit afraid of taking it out and trying the new one and having a two ton brick in my garage.

Let me ask this, if I pulled the old one, and installed the replacement, if the alarm system prevented the truck from starting, could I throw in the old one and be back where I started, or could I really mess thing up that way?

The Optimist says the glass is half full,
The Pessimist says the glass is half empty.

However, a Good Engineer would state clearly, There is 50% to much glass!

Cheers

Default update:didnt need the new ECM

dealer said the old ecm was ok, alternator was okay, 5 fusable liks were bad near the fuse block. dealer fixed all and charged me 260$.

on the way home i got 3 codes something for 4 gear ratio, and bank to lean 1 and 2

i still have my ticking sound on my new engine and i need to check my oil pressure because i still sounds like the top end has no oil pressure at idle to 1500 rpm.

Gear 4 ratio and lean bank 1&2 is a bad MAF.

Slowly but surely you are getting these codes sorted out. There is a lesson to be learned, I mean for everybody. Never cross your wires.

Another example of why you should always use proper battery terminal ends. You can't put them on wrong without extra effort.
