Only 17.4MPG? What gives?
Hello all,
Get your attention?
I know most will say I should be be glad/gratefull (and I am) that I can achieve over 17 mpg, but it dont make sense.
That was done all highway with cruise set at 70 MPH (GPS said 67mph).
Standard size 16inch tires on a 2000 DII.
What I dont get is what I normally get around town (all sub-burb,driving like a granny)
Here is what I normally get:
17.1 mpg
17.2 mpg
17.35 mpg
16.95 mpg
17.4 mpg (all highway@70mph)
Shouldnt I get better gas millage with purehighway driving?
I keep my DII in tip top order (all fluids and filters changed, plus 4 plugs, all synthetics, decent wires)
Any thoughts?
Regards,
Nick

I get 20-22 mpg driving 55 mph (and lots of rude gestures too).
17 mpg at 70mph seems about right. I get about 16.5 mpg around town accelerating slowly (no F1 driving in a 5000lb tank with the aerodynamics of a road sign).
Happy Roving,
Pete

I think the statement should be that you get very unusual mileage in town!!! most people with a stock D2 will get around 13, 14 at the most in town and between 15 and 17 on the highway.
I accelerate really slowly, never going above 2000 rpm. My Scangauge tells me GPH and MPG which help me be careful on the throttle. Also, I live in Colorado so I can coast for many miles downhill and use tailwinds when they are around.
Cheers,
Pete

Yes, only run premium fuel. Was only getting 13 to 14 before I replaced the air filter and sea foamed it.
MPG immediatly jumped after that. Unfortunatly not sure which made the bigger impact.
And yes, very pleased with 17 mpg.
Guess I would have been elated if I saw 19 or 20mpg... oh well

Hi Pete,
Have to give you credit, being able to hold it at 55 is impresive.
When I set the cruise at 70, people were pasing me like I were standing still!
As they passed, the looks were very smug
What year is your Disco?

The Discoverys are not very aerodynamic. They have a steep windshield, big mirrors, big panel gaps. The rpms a also kind of high at 70 compared to other vehicals. All wheel drive also uses extra fuel.

Jst4fun, how did you use the seafoam? Did you put in the gas tank or suck it through a vacume tube? I am also due for a new air filter. I am averaging 13.5 with mine. It would be nice to be getting better like yours. I thinkI will also change the rear 02 sensors, they have 145,000 miles on them. I already changed the front 02s
