Options for crossbars on 2004 Discovery
Hi All! I am looking to mount my Thule skybox cargo carrier on my Discovery. The 2004 has the fat rails so a lot of the options on eBay won't work.
Some questions:
Some questions:
- Can I swap the 1999-2003 rails onto the 2004 (easily)?
- Can I get bars that attach the the gutters?
- Is there any safe diy options to attach to the fat rails?
- Other ideas?
@Jason_B those roof rails have a very low load rating, 100lbs max I believe including the rails and box
I have a set of Frontrunner bars on mine and they go into the gutters - about 350 US they have a good load rating.
Land Rover recommends no more than about 110 - 130lbs up top when moving so there is that. But lots of folks with far more 140 to 170 lbs roof top tents roof racks etc so there is that.

@Jason_B Our problem is the height it is a tall leg for the gutter racks.
But you could use a couple muffler clamps per side on the round rack and some square steel tube to fabricate a support for the thule case, but I think you need one mount towards the rear as well
Or search for cargo van rack/rails on a Discovery II they are cheap and can be made to work
