Jason,
Things I would look at,
Replace the t/stat, check and replace the fan clutch,
Make sure you don't have air trapped in the coolant system.
Take it to a radiator shop for and inspection and cleaning.

Thanks Mike. That is the road I am headed down, just hard to convince the wife to buy parts. It has to be bleeding before she thinks somehing is wrong. Funny thing, though. I have spent more on her car in the past year than I have on the Rover. 1 crankshaft position sensor- $400, 1 starter $1200 ( Cadillacs have their starters under the intake where the cam used to be....sucks). I could do a lot to my truck for that much.

Once again, thanks for all of the re-assurances that I am headed down the right path. Feels better bouncing ideas off other people. I am really nervous about heat in this motor. I know it won't take much...

The problem is with a Rover that the next step may not be bleeding but a heart transplant in the form of a new engine when you drop a sleeve from overheating.

oh yeah, my eyes stay glued to the temp gauge. Hasn't gone over 3/4 and when it climbs, the a/c goes of and idle goes up. I try to explain it to her, but I have given up. I even tried to tell her that I can get a whole new set of shocks for the price of one of hers. blank stare.... then I tols her I could get it for the price of one pair of jeans. She got that one....

I am kinda looking for an excuse to drop a 4.6 in, but not ready to go that route. I am in school and working, trying to stay debt free. I have our boat almost done, so this winter I can get what I want for the truck. When you drop $2500 for a new boat motor, things get tight for the truck (even though it's pulling the boat).....Note: I am using my 3/4 ton to pull the boat, I don't want to chance anything with the Rover.

Are u loosing coolant? My '99 did the same thing, when i had a radiator leak. It would get hot, and as soon as i pulled over to shut it down, the temp gauge would "mysteriously" start to drop dramatically, I finally chalked it up to coolant getting low and water pump trying to pump air (hasn't happened since radiator fix.) If you're not loosing coolant best guess would be T-stat.

Ok, changed it last night. Put a 195 failsafe on it. It runs just a notch warmer. Instead of the needle covering the bottom wave on the indicator symbol, I can now barely see the bottom. No issues as of yet, but this problem has been really random.

I am still watching it like a hawk. I have had bad luck this weekend. Driving home from dinner, 20 miles in the country, my rear window decided, for no reason, to shatter. (on the Cadillac) No holes. no chips, just boom and its toast. I called Cadillac today and they won't do anything. The only thing I can think of is that the cold inside and the heat outside, combined with the body flex going over a hill at 70 put too much strain on it.

I guess this means I can get new shocks now. The nice, new car is now about $1500 higher in repair bills than my old POS Rover.
