Default P0305 code repair

2000 D2 with approx 180,000 miles. Bought it five years back, did heads about 3 years ago. It's been running great....until now.

Hi, I've just noticed a flashing engine light, ruff idle and lose of power. My scanner is giving me P0305 which I believe is #5 cylinder misfire.

I've read about this and appreciate everyones info on the forum.

I am going to install new plug wires (first time since buying the truck 5 years ago)

New plugs (put new plugs in when bought it 5 years back)

and I also wanted to replace the coil packs.

My question is: should I bother with the coil packs? If i'm changing the plug wires will replacing the coil packs at the same time make the install easier?
Is there anything else I should be looking at to fix this code?

Thanks for any help.

If you are doing the "remove the upper intake" method for changing wires, then you might want to change the coil packs. Chances are it's just your wires plugs, but who wants to tear it down, change plugs and wires, only to find out you have a bad coil pack.

I have a number 3 misfire, but no flashing light. I am changing plugs this weekend. If that doesn't fix it I am going to go for wires and coil packs. I hate doing things twice.

Thanks, keep me posted on how it goes. I check the wire connection tonight and put a new plug in #5. I was so excited when i felt a click in the coil pack when I pushed the plug wire in. Still has the same issue. Next it'll be wire replacement.

Swap the wires with the wire on the opposite bank. If your misfire moves, it's the wire, if not, it may be the coil. I'm assuming all the plugs look tuhe same and nothing was stem cleaned?

Changed all the plugs and all the wires. Still have the P0305.
Noticed corrosion on the wire end of the plug in cylinder #5.

Next? Compression test in #5?

I'm still thinking it's not coils. If it was coils wouldn't I have misfires on more than 1 cylinder?

Thanks for any help.

Hello all, new to this site, sorry for long read but I need help. I have a 2010 range rover sport hse with about 156000kms. This morning, I was on a really bumpy ramp onto the highway. When it came time to switch lanes, I got the "restricted performance" code along with a serious drop in power. I could barely maintain highway speed. Car seems to run fine while at high speed, just not a lot of power. When I exited the highway, the engine was running rough at lower speed and while waiting at a red light the whole car was shaking and idling rough. Tried turning it off and back on, no change. Upon pulling into a parking spot at low speed, the car shut off on me. Put into park and restarted, was able to park but engine still running rough and feels like it wants to choke out. I hooked my scanner up and it is saying misfire in all cylinders, misfire detected on start-up and pressure line solenoid line 5 fault short circuit. Yesterday I filled up with mid fuel instead of premium, but that's the only change I've made. Tried unplugging battery and reconnecting and also added some octane booster to try and counter the mid fuel grade. Unplugged air flow sensors and plugged back in. Still no improvement. I'm wondering if anyone has had the same problem and knows the fix? Thanks.
