Morning all - Well it only took 2 weeks after purchasing a 1996 for CEL to come on. I had completed an engine flush and topped her up with Castrol 20w-50. A trusted mech. on mine pulled the P1137 & P1138 codes, reset the parameters and took her out for 40 mile spin on the highway at 70 mph. The o2 sensor "looked" OK and his thought was the highway driving could clean some carbon build up of them. The CEL now comes on and off from time to time with no noticible performance change.

Any assitance on what sensors need to be replaced and helpful hints for DIY.

Here are the OBD-II Diagnostic Trouble Code descriptions:

P1137 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Signal Intermittant (Bank 1 Sensor 2)
P1138 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

Sounds like you are having issues wtih the O2 sensor. It may be going out or there is a wiring issue (loose connector or broken wire).

 

Check the O2 sensor wiring connectors. We have seen more than a few vehicles where engine fluid leaks have ended up inside the connector. This has caused flucuating readings from the sensors and thrown codes. Unplug then and spray them with Contact Cleaner to flush out any contaminents and plug them back in. If this does not work there is a chance they may be at the end of their service life. How many miles on your vehicle?

Thank everyone...there's 111,000 miles on her. They were replaced 4 yrs ago at 75,000. I'll try to clean the connects as suggested. So it sounds as though the circuit for heating the sensor up before engine temps are higher is out of wack. I'll report back. THanks all
