Default P1842 & P1843 fault codes

Hello everyone,

First time poster here. I own a Discovery 2 TD5 (automatic) and believe that I have some basic knowledge, but am by no means an expert! So forgive me when I phrase certain things a bit odd.
After I start the car the blinking green m/s lights immediately jump on. Which puts it into the dreaded 'limp mode'. When I move through the selected gears the P and R show on the display without fault but once I put it into D the D on the display starts flashing too (so does the little red light on the selector panel). If I continue in 3,2, or 1 the display still shows the flashing D. And the little red light on the panel stays in the D position too. But I can physically move it into 3, 2, or 1
I am also in possession of a Nanocom and when I read the fault codes in the autogearbox section it gives me 2 of them: P1842 - can level monitoring & P1843 - can timeout monitoring.

The XYZ switch has already been replaced as that seemed the most obvious at the beginning. But that did not solve the problem. When I read the live input in the Nanocom I can also see that this data (open/closed) changes accordingly when moving through the different gears. So I do not think this is the problem. But perhaps I am overlooking something?
The CAN wiring at the ECU has also been checked & cleaned but unfortunetly the result remains the same. So now I am a little bit lost...

I noticed a few other things when reading the live data. I am not sure if they are related to the issue but figured I would just mention them:
1) When I read the live data in TD5 engine -> inputs switch -> gear box, this stays in p/n no matter what gear I select on the selector panel.
2) In the live data solenoid valves 1,2, and 3 keep showing OFF, no matter what gear I select on the selector panel.

I thought of the solenoid valves in the valve body as the next step but somewhere else I read that the ATF oil level & quality cannot trigger the flashing lights.

So that is why I am here. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

Start with your battery, check the voltage before starting in the morning, then as you have a TD5 after the glow plugs have warmed up but before turning the ignition. You should be 12.4 or better. My bet is your battery is iffy.

Thanks Richard, I have checked my battery and tried with another known good one and checked the voltages which are with in perimeters but I do need a new battery any way so will purchase a brand new one and see if that makes a difference,

can I assume that if I fit a brand new battery and still doesn’t work that this could also rule out a bad alternator?, as the battery should be sufficient with it been brand new?.

Thanks

Check your battery cable terminals, at battery, starter and engine grounding location. Must be clean, tight and corrosion free.

@Moody31 @Adventure The battery or battery connections as noted by @The Deputy are the most common causes. If all of that is good, and you have good charging voltage 13.6 or better, your engine turns over good and strong right away generally you go to the XYZ switch on the the transmission.

Thank you all for the replies. I have also checked the battery (no fault there) but will check the terminals too. I'll send an update later.
