painted and reinstalled fender arches
so I removed my fender arches and filled and painted them. Mine were in very poor condition. the had extremely deep pitting. so I sanded them down with 100 grit, and sprayed many coats of filler primer on them and sanding between every two or three coats. I tried some spot putty filler but the plastic is too flxible. if you try to fill more than some pin holes you'll create problems. the best thing to do is to sand the primer down till your exposing the majority of the original plastic. the less material you have on them the better they will last in the long run.
I began with 100 grit on a power sander to surface the pitting.
I then sprayed about 6 coats of sanding primer, sanding between coats
then sprayed a couple coats of black satin paint to "seal" the primer
finished up with two or three coats of black bumper coating
I wasn't excited about double sided tape, so I chose permatex rtv silicone adhesive. very strong awesome stuff! comes in a caulking gun tube. I stuck them on and taped for about an hour to hold them. excess wipes easily with denatured alcohol. I'm considering "caulking" them to fill the crack, with some black silicone. the trick to caulking anything is using a wet towel to remove all excess so that you only have a very fine line in the "seam". it gives a nice finished look without a goopy "caulked" appearance.
On a side note a can of denatured alcohol is a must for this project, it allows you to clean prior to adhesion. also allows you to prep all surfaces before and during the painting process.
