So I’ve been able to locate unpainted stock bumpers for my 2002 Discovery SE, but not sure what the best process is to get painted (not the entire thing, just the parts that originally are).
Is there a source for painted, or do I just need to find a local shop to paint it?
Painted our front bumper caps with Duplicolor from Advanced Auto. Just picked the closest color and a can of clear coat and sprayed three layers of paint and three clear. Eventually, l'll wheel them out with little compound, to harden paint.
Yeah, some colors are harder to match with spray can, but l was fortunate and had several silvers to chose from. I just took a broken piece of old plastic cap into store and matched it up.
Funny part was...we bought this bumper used, locally, from a guy that hit a deer, then engine puked, he'd painted the end caps silver already, thought hey what the chances of that...buying a used/new bumper and end caps are already silver...but...his silver was way off once l held them up to ours. So, resprayed them.
A lot of local parts stores can mix you a rattle can to match your paint. Your D2 has the paint code either on the door sticker or on a plate in the engine bay. Around 2x the price of a standard colour rattle can, so not too expensive.
Like Harvlr said, can be mixed in store. Can also buy a pre-filled aerosol online - usually around $30. 1 can is plenty to do the end caps. Highly recommend SEM trim black for any black trim pieces on the disco (black part of front/rear bumper, wheel arches)
My current stock bumper is all cracked up. Not sure if I want to replace it w/ stock bumper, or choose a simple steel one.
I've read that aftermarket steel bumpers don't have the same safety design (crumple zones reduced, more force hitting the frame, etc.) but would be nice if I didn't worry about cracking the plastic bumper after every little bump.
You can go here and get your paint matched in a spray can. They have a kit with clear coat etc. On the bumper your only painting the corners so should be pretty easy to get it right.
Try Automotive touch up, https://www.automotivetouchup.com/. I’ve used it for spot repairs and the color matched my Rover perfectly. They can match your factory color. Complete with primer, color and clear, all in rattle cans,
