Default Passenger Side Under Dash

When we bought our 2001 Discovery II last week, we noticed the area under the dash at the passenger's feet is hanging down and not secured. Can't tell what it is supposed to look like.

Can someone describe what goes in the holes or show me a picture of what this should normally look like.

Thanks.

That is the high cost cardboard, they saved money there and on the oil pressure gauge so they could over-engineer the alarm system. The big hole allows air to be returned to the heating/AC fan for circulation. You can buy round plastic "plugs" at the parts store (blister pack aisle of generic items) that have a push in stud on the back used to hold this back in position (there are mounting holes, but they are not threaded). While it is down, IMHO, it would be a good time to remove three small bolts, drop the HVAC fan down for inspection, it can become fouled with leaves and such drawn in from the outside.

Are there supposed to be any grill covers or anything over the air return holes or are they just open like this? Thanks for the response.

To answer our last question, no, there are no covers.
So, how mechanical are you? You might want to look at my major service list on the sticky at the top of this section, at your mileage, it probably all needs to be done, especially the inspection/rebuild or replacement of your front drive shaft.
If you have an questions, give me a shout.

Thanks for the list Mike. I should be able to handle most everything on the list. I try to avoid dealers whenever possible to stretch my $$.

That's a good sign someone has been in there for some reason. Maybe to replace the blower fan? Maybe for something else. Anyway its a easy fix using the black push pin plugs they go threw the hole and then you push the pin and they expand holding in place.
