Default Pictures of an exploded Joint that destroyed transmission

This 2002 DII with 80 K miles let go of its driveshaft taking out the transmission housing when the joint exploded. (( Bought it like this)). Luckily, found a used good transmission for 400 and a drive shaft for 100.

make sure you have the new drive shaft rebuilt with greasable u joints and a new centering ball kit so it doesnt break and put a hole in your new used $400 tranny.

We need start a club. Who's going to be the clever guy to build a plate steel shield that can be bolted to the t-case between the trans?

It is already done and rebuilt with grease fittings. But this double cardan joint design is archaic and pre-historic and it is disappointing that Land Rover continued to use this design all the way through the 2004 MY.

The double cardan joint cancels the angular velocity variation that a single U-joint cannot, but there are multiple newer, simpler and cheaper options that they could have adopted.

Nevertheless, its is a Land Rover and what else can I say!!!

This is a clever idea and I am sure it will work.

On the other hand, I have been looking at building a drive shaft with a CV joint that will do a better job than the double cardan joint and it will require no grease since a CV joint has a boot that encases the joint and keeps the grease inside.

What the heck ever happened to driveshaft hoops?

If I had a DII, I'd spend an hour and weld one up

Doesn't the carrier unbolt like my DI? - I'd put a 4-6" hoop off that, no wait, I'd probably

check it twice a year as I do with my DI, never mind. (No desrespect intended to anyone)
