willrok13, did you pin your liners with the engine still in the truck? I have a tick that I am not 100% sure is a liner, but I am starting to think it is.

edit: looked closer at the picture and I can see that it is still bolted to the transmission. How long did it take you?

I left the motor in the truck, but I did have to remove both engine mounts, the starter, and a few other things as I worked around the block. Took me about 8 or 9 hours over a couple of days. I purchased a small right angle drill for about $30 on amazon that let me drill for the taps (don't have air tools yet). Still no ticking and the truck runs great. I used Irontite Ceramic on my other '04 as I had a cylinder 4 misfire. Was not a head gasket. I'm considering doing the white '04 as well (the truck I pinned) to avoid any future issues as a result of the slipped liner. I will replace the motors in both trucks when/if they fail. But until then I'm enjoying them both... Good luck. Also, order a couple more taps/screws a size or two up incase you strip out the delicate aluminum threads. It's well worth $20 to insure the truck won't be down later if that happens (fingers crossed)...

I need to poke around with a stethoscope to get a better idea where the tick is coming from. Seems to be the left side head, and it doesn't always tick.

If you have a scan gauge, start paying attention to the exact temperature when the ticking starts. Mine was exactly 154 degrees, every time, and it sounded like a rod was about to come out. Not difficult to track down lol.

Ok, mine sounds nothing like that! It is very faint, must be some valve train noise. Guess I am just being paranoid! I am trying to make sure everything is sorted before driving to CO in August for the LR National Rally.

I have seen a few nice Rovers around Bham lately. I know there aren't really any trails around, but does anybody ever get together to hang out?

Guys,
How prone are the '04's to develop a slipped liner?

Is this a lot more common than an 03 or 02 or 01?

Thinner or different engine block run in an 04?
