Default Planning For Next Winter in Vermont-265/70 R18

I'm moving from FL to VT and want to be prepared for snow. I am looking at General Grabbers AT2- 265/70 R18. they also make a stock size 255/55 R18 but it is not rated for deep snow. Anyone know if there are any issues running the 265/70's on a stock '03 Disco (rubbing, throwing off the speedo, etc?) The side wall is 7.3", 3 1/2" taller than the 255's. I know some may recommend going with 16" rims but since I don't off-road and I will be on a grad-students budget, I don't want to spend the $ on rims AND tires.
Thanks

If anyone has pics of the 265/70 on their stock disco, plz post.

If that tire is 3.5" taller they will not fit, but even if they did you'd put your spider gears and axles under a lot of extra stress, so you'd have to go to HD anyway. If you don't mind going to 16 inch rims I would definitely recommend doing that. If you sell the rims you have now and pick up some 16 inch steels or even alloys if you like the look better you could break even or sometimes even make money off the 18s. Just clean em up nice before you sell em and you're good to go.

If this is a highway rig, you could just get an extra set of 16" steel rims and buy good snow tires for them. Use your current wheels in the warm months and swap tires in the fall. You'd be good to go anywhere.

Never mind, see your on a grad-school budget.

That is too big a tire for a non lifted 03, it is also more tire then you need for deep snow. Extra wide tires are not always the best for snow.

Wide tires are good for floatation in deep snow but they will suck on ice, especially trying to stop. On ice narrower tires give you more pressure on the ground that increases your traction.

I would like to go with the 16", but since school has placed a prohibition on working for all First Year students, I have to make every penny count. The OP's are right on the 265/70 being to large, so I might look into 255/60 which only have 1/2" more sidewall than what I have now.
That being said, if anyone wants to sell a set of 16's", I may take them if the price is right.

I'd compare a set of Nokian's (one of the best winter tires you can get) + a set of 16" rims, for what the 18" Generals cost. Seems like you're paying a real premium for 18" tires.
Check your local Farmers Coop, I got my 16" Nokians are the Tennessee Farmers Coop for $112 ea that AB was selling for about $200 each.

nynole I really recommend pricing up a set of steel 16" wheels and start looking into selling your 18"s. Even after buying tires you could make money off the deal.

I would like to see any pics of upgraded tires on stock 18s too! I am also heavily considering the Grabber AT2's

Your options are limited in the 18" size. Look at the Hankook DynaPro RF10, it's a great buy, has received great reviews, and is available in nearly every size-combination imaginable! I've got a set of 265/65/18 going on my truck next week.

You can check them out here:

Cheers!
