Default Please check my Coolant Temp numbers

Hello all. I’m new to the Rover world so I just wanted someone to look at my numbers and let me know if I’m in the right place.

While idling for about 20 minutes in the school pick up line today, AC blasting, 100* outside, it creeped from 194 to 215 before I shut off the AC and it slowly dropped back down.

Normal idle without AC it won’t go above 200.

Highway cruising at 65-70 mph it’ll float between 185 and 194 depending on hills.

Around town it’s about 190-194.

I replaced the entire cooling system minus the heater core and fan/clutch a few days ago. I’m now running green coolant and a bottle of water wetter, as well as the grey 180* stat. System was held in vacuum with a Robinair tool for a few minutes before filling with said coolant, so there should be no air.

I planned to replace the fan clutch, but the one in the truck is integrated with the fan.

My concern here is that I should be able to idle theoretically indefinitely with the AC cranked if the system is operating as it should. Other than the fan and clutch, I don’t see any other concerns here. Is this just a “Rover-ism” til I go inline t-stat and/or e-fan? The current clutch seems fine by the way, stiff to spin.

Thanks all!

Grab a Dorman 620-112 fan and Hayden 2991 fan clutch and call it a day vs that 03-04 piece design unit.

Thats the clutch I’ve got, and have the fan in my Amazon wishlist. I kind of assumed I’d be able to use the clutch with the stock fan.

Do you think that may help my idle temps?

Is your electric fan mounted in front of the condenser running, while A/C is on? The mechanical fan is not enough air flow, while idling...in those type of ambient air temps. I believe your electric fan should activate, once A/C is turned on.

Brian,

Indeed it is running when the AC is switched on.

Interesting thing happened just now while I was testing the e fan. Without the AC running there’s a real bad surging miss in the idle. With it running, not a problem. P0150 is present and P0155 is pending. Weird how the AC has such a dramatic affect though.

Idle goes up when the AC is on.

One of the problems is the condenser position in front of the rad, so if you get marginal air flow you are moving hot air past the condenser which is hot to the rad. 20 minutes is along time to idle with the air on or off ,in these. Popping into neutral and bringing up the revs to 1500+ might have helped.

Oh, good point. I found a few missing clamps near the IAC and the lines going into the valve covers today. Hoping that helps clear up the idle.

True, I just want to ensure I’ve got the system the best I can expect before getting disappointed. If I didn’t have the kids with me I would’ve just opened the windows and turned off the truck.

Gonna start with that new fan (it’ll be here Wednesday.) If that doesn’t help I may look into another fan.
