Default The plot thickens on the $750 1995 Disco

Ok, so i go to buy this vehicle (the 95 disco that i looked posted about earlier this week) and the guy is like, "i called the guy i bought this from and he said it needed an oil pump. He said when he replaced the timing chain he put it all back together and the oil pump didn't seem to be working. so he gave up and got out of it for what he had in it. (it was a trade in, this guy has a small dealership) the belts and pulleys are not installed but they are inside the truck. so i have to put all that together. any suggestions on how i should go about this. i called the dealer and the oil pump is only $784.64 or something outrageous. this truck has sunroofs and mine doesn't so i would like to drive it. i only hope that i can fix it up to run nice. so how do i tell if the oil pump is out, besides taking the guy's word? and how hard is it to replace (how hard mechanically not on the pocket book). i started in shortly and it didn't sound good. the tapping sort of noise cane from the top of the engine. for the most part the engine sounded like it could be fine. ha. it didn't seem like it was fried. just needed a little work you know. how do i go about figuring out what's wrong with it?

I am thinking i put it all back together and then try to clean out the engine with atf or diesel or something and then go from there. is it easy to put the belts and pulleys and such back on? i can't imagine it being much different than any other vehicle. thanks for the input.

Ive have found that the Pulleys are relativley hard to put back in. I was working on an RR classic but, because they basically have the same engine I would assume that putting the pulleys back on would be no different. It can be done but, it was a pain for me. As for the oil pump, you might want to try ebay or roverparts.com. Be careful on ebay because, you don't always know what you are going to get. I found this on ebay, much cheaper but, once again its ebay.

I am no exoert in anyway, just curious though. When you started the engine did you wait to see if the oil light went off? That would have been a good signal if there was any oil pressure or not, rather than just relying on the sound method.

I am not sure how hard it is for the pulleys so good luck.

Well, i didn't let it run long as no belts were connected and the lack of oil. but the light was on while it was running. maybe 5 seconds max. but either way i am going to get everything back together and then go from there. i hope i don't have to buy a new pump. it is sure looking that way though.

the oil pump in that auction is for a 1996-1999. this is a 1995. it will not work will it? they aren't the same are they? the engines look different between mine and this one.

Try roverlandparts, they may have one reaosnably. If they do, let me know, I think I have a 10% off code somewhere.

I do not see why you need to replace the front cover, cant you just replace the oil pump?

"The oil pump is built into the front cover. If you need to replace the oil pump, you must replace the front cover as well."
-From the page for the Front cover.

Isn't that what that means? you have to do it all?

I know thats what is says but then why do they sell the parts seperate?
The oil light staying on for 5-10 seconds after cold start up is normal.
