I had a code like that but it was an incorrect 4th gear ratio... with that being said a new maf cleared it right up.

Your MAF is bad.
It is sending a code that messes up the transmission and because the transmission has its own computer when it gets a bad signal from the MAF it does not know what to do.
DiscoMike knows this for 100% and I am 95% that is the problem.
No other warning lights?
The "M" and "S" lights are not flashing are they?

No you can NOT clean your MAF, if you do it will kill it once and for all.
Once you order a new one and it gets to you then you can try and clean it.
Yes it is safe to drive, but it will act up and may leave you stranded.

so the only PO 734 fix is a new MAF? They are $200, not the end of the world, I guess. I would prefer to know if this is for sure the culprit before ordering one, though.

Then you will need to take it in to a shop and have it tested to find out for 100%.
When you buy a new one make sure it is a Land Rover original, if not you will have problems with it again.
You can get them cheaper than $200 though, just search around for them.

but i still have the "whine" there, which I was told was the LEV pump. But I have isolated the area where it is coming from and it is not the LEV pump. Can't figure out where exactly it is coming from, though. AHHHHHHH!!!!
