Relay most likely.

My D2 was not optioned with the cold weather package, but adding the seat heater switches and installing a heated windshield has been one of the best additions I've made to it. I was unaware that heated side mirrors were optional on these. Something to get for next winter.

I feel that this is where I am let down by Land Rover. Heated mirrors should be standard. Period. Driving around for an hour, yesterday, all windows were ice free, except for my side mirrors. Impossible to break the ice off from side mirrors without damaging them. I'll start looking for replacements this summer.

This makes me wonder, are the actual mirrors different or is it the activation that is missing. We all know what they did with seat heaters... All seats have them, if you didn't pay for them you don't get the buttons... So I wonder if the mirrors are similar, maybe they just need "turned on" in the BCU or something.

10" here is Seattle as of yesterday, more coming down this morning... I made it down off my hill and back up without issue yesterday... If it isn't a sheet of ice I'll be ok again today.

Dave.Next you'll be telling me you have "heated tires". It's embarrassing to drive around with Bags-o-Ice hanging on my Rover.

Guys..just plug this in to your power inverter and you won’t have to worry about ice on the mirrors.

I cruised around in the 97 XD today (hit an off road spot I know of), and before I could move I had to use the defrost. I hit the rear defrost button and both my side mirrors melted the ice away pretty darn fast. Rear defrost didn't do bad either!

The trail I hit up is the main in/out ATV/UTV for a huge deer lease north of my house about 15min. It had about 20+ frozen over massive mud puddles which the XD just plowed thru. I took my wife and kids with me, and my wife was not having a good time. She kept thinking I was going to get us stuck out in the middle of nowhere in 25F weather, and meanwhile all I was hearing from the back seat was weeeeeeee weeeeeee weeeeeee off roading is so much FUN!!!!! Didn't get nearly the snow I'd have liked, but we did certainly get the ice! I saw so many 2WD trucks just going completely sideways while the XD was handling it like any other day.

Well, Clint Eastwood, I don't have that luxury. Dave03s is right, I must have a button missing, or my mirrors aren't wired for defrost. My owners manual is for a "04', not an "02".

So I just checked my owners manual. It states that heated side mirrors are an integral part of the defrosting system. In order for side mirrors to operate, the rear defogger button must be engaged. Not anything connected to hvac. Wondering how rear window is working, but not side mirrors

Over the years I have seen other wires in the doors broken at the black rubber boot. Worth a look, and yes if the rear defroster works it should be on the same circuit. Knowing LR it's probably a hit or miss deal on the later models. I think say back in the 94-99 D1 days that was considered a standard option. Then over the years LR probably was like this is an option hardly anyone notices so they removed it from later models.
