Default possible discovery purchase

I am looking at a 97 with 78k on it in excellent condition. It has clean carfax report. The only problems I could find are minor interior ones: One of the sunroof visor clips is broken ( owner has replacement kit), the drivers side sun visor clip is broken ( found them online for $6) and the passenger side seat adjuster is loose( works fine but plastic part that holds it to center console is loose). I checked all the regular things you would on any car/truck: brakes done in May, no oil leaks even though engine does not show evidence of recent cleaning, engine smooth and quiet( can barely hear it), tranny smooth with no pauses at shift points or noise, power seems what I expected, all electronics and sunroofs/windows, keyless work properly. Interior is in near imaculate condition except the few things mentioned above. Driveline u-joints seem tight and tires near new. Tracks and brakes straight with no play in steering or vibration at any speed. No smoke at all. The paint and rubber on body is almost perfect. Anything else I should check specific to this model? I have a compression tester, but what values should I see on it? He is asking $8800 and compared to others in Salt lake area, that seems good considering miles and condition. I am used to working on all the electronic stuff and mechanicals on my 94 powerstroke, so no stranger to that type of thing.

The price seems high. I would watch Ebay for pricing and to see what they go for. I bought my 98 LSE with 90k miles on it and paid $7000 for it. It came out of Memphis.

everything you are looking at is good. The big thing about a rover is the maintenance. If the records are not maintained, then look hard. most rover owner keep them pretty straight. have the vehicle checked by a rover specialist before you buy. it is a little pricey. I can't do the eval, so that is just by the numbers. discos have their own special quirks. check the faq section and get an idea. Rovers are not cheap to maintain. get the manual and do it yourself if you can. It has saved alot for me. 96 disco 130k and still going strong. hope it helps. gotta love a rover. duboff

Well, I got it and am pleased as pie I am used to my 94 powerstroke and they are a maint nightmare. I have never taken it to a shop yet and have fixed everything on it myself ( even injectors)- saved over 3k so far easily. I got the disco home and love it so far- just the regular loose screws and such that I tightened. I changed oil and fuel filter and plugs right off the bat on disco . only problem on it was that I noticed the rear wiper did not work or the sprayer. Well, it turns out the rear wiper only works when engine running and not just with key turned to power aux things so that is fine. Regarding the rear washer, I explored a bit and could hear motor running when I pressed the button, so knew that worked. I then checked hoses. well, some fool had disconnected the hose to the rear sprayer and plugged the hose from fluid res with a rolled up piece of paper. Why they did this is a mystery- thinking they were working on it and plugged the hose from fluid tank to prevent it all spilling and forgot to unplug it and reconnect it. I connected it and it works fine The engine is so quiet that I can barely hear it and tranny is wicked smooth. No leaks at all and engine compartment is completely dry. The only oil at all on it is right at vc gaskets and it is not realy a leak- just can barly see a fine amount. Easy fix on it as I have done vc on other veh, but not even a worry as it is more like a slight dampening at the vc not a leak. I love the ride and plenty of room for the dogs. Time will tell, but so far am loving it. I could have gotten a cheaper one, but you get what you pay for. no rust or blemishes on ext either. Am thinking of swapping out the shocks on it ( they are still fine) for billsteins as they are the best shocks, but with the coils will I see any difference going to a great shock from the stockers? It rides more than acceptable, but not sure what they should ride like with the coil over the shocks. You guys seing any bounce over potholes and such or going out of parking lots? Thanks
