Default possible head gasket?

I've been in my engine compartment a lot lately because I'm getting ready to change out my plugs and wires and I noticed what looks to be a little bit of fluid (looks like oil but not yet confirmed) on my right valve cover near the gasket. I'm going to clean my engine up today when it's cool so I can get a better look to see if it is "new" fluid or if it's been there and I just hadn't noticed it. My oil is clean and coolant levels are constant. What else should I be looking for? Can I let the vehicle run in place once I've cleaned the engine or do I need to drive it around the block a couple times to get the RPM's up?

Thanks

Since it is a D2, you can power scrub your engine at the local car wash, don' worry about getting anything wet cause nothing will effect a D2. By the time you get home it will be dry and then you can check it every couple of days for fresh seepage. Most likely you just have a leaking valve cover which is pretty normal.

Mike,

Does the engine cleaning also apply to an 02, or do I need to cover anything

All D2's including your 02 and you don't have to cover anything.

ButI thoughthosing down a warm engine was bad for it and that your better off waiting till it cools down. And for a D2 to cool down.........Might as well leave it there overnight

I drive from my house about 2 blocks to clean my engine, the exhaust maniflods might steam a little but that is all and I have been doing this to my D2 for 5 years and before that my Mercedes.

Yeah, an old cast iron engine blockmight be more proned to crack w/ cold water, not aluminum.

I washed the engine compartment out. I'll let everyone know how it turns out. Now that I scrubbed it, it could be a little seepage. If it looks "suspect" I'll take a pic and post it.

thanks all.
