Default Post head gasket issues

This is more of a little stuff that will drive you nuts post.

I now have about 160 miles on the Disco since I completed the head gasket work. This is a mix of local driving, and 120 mile round trip that was a mix of hi way and city driving

The good :

Runs beautifully no issues there

The issues
  1. Temps are great in motion bounces between 188.6 and 194.2 (10 to 75 miles an hour). At idle she peaks at 206 this is new since the head gaskets she used to peak at 201-202. I suspect a compromised radiator, with reduced flow.
  2. Codes of course there are codes 0441, 1171- 1174 These are most likely a damaged vacuum lines, the tiny ones, mine were not in great shape before and I repaired a crack during the head gasket job
  3. Misc loose connections, grounds and a positive wire to the battery
  4. Mode switch issues and lights for transmission (red led's) need to remove the center bezel and check the wiring. My bezel is pretty loose so it may get replaced
  5. I was worried about the exhaust but so far it seems to just be me

Solutions are all pretty easy
  1. Reverse flush the rad, possibly remove and CLR it as well - replace if required
  2. Replace the vacuum lines and purge switch
  3. Check all the grounds and electrical connections - I will be doing some changes in that area and will post a seperate thread
  4. Not sure yet but, lift the bezel and check the connections - I may have picked up a bit of corrosion.

Richard - I am still tracking down vacuum leaks, last things I have not replaced are:

1. Replace brake booster line <-thinking about a rubber hose instead of plastic
2. Replace IAC <-got one from Best4x4, just lazy and have not tried that yet.

I am getting the incorrect gear ratio and lean on banks 1 and 2. I just clear the codes whenever they come up.

I would advise against CLR based on research I did when considering it for flushing my heater core. I instead chose some Prestone flushing product that seemed to work really well. I can definitely recommend, keeping in mind there's really no silver bullet for restoring a radiator or heater core to new-level condition aside from actually replacing it.

@Brandon318 thanks for the feedback, CLR was a thought on a last test before springing for a new radiator.

Purge Valve, and vacuum lines ordered.

I got 1 of these to isolate extra connections from my battery connectors 25.00 CDN

Transmission issue appears to be sorted out loose grounds and possibly a loose connection under the bezel.

Now at about 300 miles no major issues, just the transfer case, diff service and an oil change to do.
  1. Temps are great in motion bounces between 188.6 and 194.2 (10 to 75 miles an hour). At idle she peaks at 206 this is new since the head gaskets she used to peak at 201-202. I suspect a compromised radiator, with reduced flow. - on going but not critical several small top ups at the bleed screw have made this better peaks at around 203 now
  2. Codes of course there are codes 0441, 1171- 1174 These are most likely a damaged vacuum lines, the tiny ones, mine were not in great shape before and I repaired a crack during the head gasket job - only the 441 left and I have a new purge valve
  3. Misc loose connections, grounds and a positive wire to the battery - All Corrected
  4. Mode switch issues and lights for transmission (red led's) need to remove the center bezel and check the wiring. My bezel is pretty loose so it may get replaced. - Works when it wants to I think the wiring harness has been pulled too tight warm weather fix bezel will get replaced too
  5. I was worried about the exhaust but so far it seems to just be me - No issue disco owner Paranoia

Inline thermostat mod will get you temps that almost never get to 190, fluctuate between 172 and 185. PM me for details

@Extinct I have been considering that mod, just need to cross the rad off the list of suspects, but a 2 deg and snow today it can wait a few weeks

I like Best4x4's clear tube mod too.
That way you can easily see bubbles in the coolant when bleeding...or if there's a problem/air getting into cooling system.
The pyrex tube with clamps is $60 on ebay.
