Default Potential New Owner ~ Need Help and Suggestions

Hey Guys, I am looking at picking up a Discovery, probably a 2000-2002 model Discovery II. I have been looking for the past few months kicking around the idea, and I am coming closer and closer to buying one.

I come from the Import performance community though and I have no clue what I should be looking for and what quirks these SUV's come with.

I am possibly going to look at a 2000 Disco with 122k miles. Guy says it runs great, but occassionally the Traction control light and ABS light come on. Is that a common issue? Fixes?

Any Info you guys can give me on what to look for and check in a used Land Rover, and anything I should check to see if the owner has done maintenance-wise would be much appreciated. Any tips or knowledge as well.

The "3 amigos" (TC, HDC, ABS lights) are a common problem with DII's, TONS of threads on fixes.

If you are willing to spend a little more to get a 2004, they have the CDL, Which is useful off road. If you are not planning on taking it off road, and want to save the money, go for an older model. Be wary of the 03 models because many have a oil pump issue that will blow the whole engine. There is a VIN # range of defective models.

Expect many little quirks with these vehicles. For the most part the major components are pretty good but even head gaskets go, which is an expensive job even if you do it yourself.

If you are willing to do a lot of your own work, the RAVE manual is a great service manual for the Land Rover for free and there is tons of help on here and other fourms.

I recomend taking it to a Land Rover specialized mechanic, not the dealer, but not just any old shop. Google Maps Land Rover in your area and you will find independent land rover service specialists.

whoa whoa whoa... head gaskets are $150.. not all the much if you do it yourself. the only way head gaskets are expensive if you do it yourself is if you consider your time money.

as for my 99 D2 off road, i think it does a pretty damn swell job. although i do agree a CDL would be nice i can install a CDL in my 99 cheaper than i could buy an 04 with it stock.

Hmmm, i maybe the readup i was looking at included the cost of getting the heads resurfaced and some other stuff. Thats good to know that they are that cheap tho!

Wow, a lot of info to take in too haha. So driveshafts fall out and destroy trannies...hm....somethign to consider I suppose. What exactly is the process for getting the new propshaft that can be lubed? Does someone sell a driveshaft ready to be put in?

I may see what I can get an '04 for. Otherwise I'll stick with the 99.5-2002 and avoid the '03's.

I guess I'll be looking up a Land Rover mechanic in my area as well.

Any recommendations in the Orlando/Central FL area?

The prop shaft problem is one time only - if you keep it greased. 99.5-early 01 models still have the CDL without the shift linkage, late 01 and 02,03 models don't have it but it can be added. In my signature is a link to download the RAVE manual which is the dealers work shop manual.

Okay, just to clarify above, if needed. d2luvr is saying that the 99.5 and early 01 has the locking differential but you actually have to crawl under the truck and turn a wrench to activate it. That said, it is fairly easy to add the linkage from the center differential into the cabin.

A lot of options out for the front driveshaft : Rebuild it yourself with greaseable U-Joints, buy on from Tom Woods, Great Basin Rovers, and you can usually find them on eBay too. It all depends on how much $$$ you want to spend.

I have an '02 and love it, still have the original DS....keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't kill my trans before I get it replaced

u can also have a drive line shop rebuild it like i did.
