Power Steering Leak / Fluid Question

Power Steering Leak / Fluid Question
I hate starting a new thread but not really finding a consensus on what I'm looking for.
Awhile back I had a leak from the reservoir to bottom of pump hose so I replaced it.
During this process, I flushed the fluid by sucking out everything from the reservoir and refilling with new fluid.
I'd crank the truck, lock to lock about 10 times or so and repeat - suck it out and refill - I did this multiple times.
Since this process was done, my pump continued to leak - I dont have an issue so much with the leak (212k miles), but how much worse it got after this flush procedure.
One day I started getting the pump groan/whine so I checked the fluid and the hose side of the reservoir was practically empty.
I leveled out the fluid in it, drove to the store and bought more fluid and Lucas Stop Leak.
Was able to top it off with a whole bottle Stop Leak and the enter situation just continued to get worse. At one point I lost a good 1/2" of fluid level over night as it ran out onto the floor.
I already had cardboard etc down, but still........
I now have a replacement pump on the way as it was the front seal leaking so I'm replacing it.
My biggest question here is about this odd sequence of events.
Why did flushing it and adding Stop Leak make it worse? Coincidence maybe?
I read numerous threads about fluid and ultimately it seemed that "any regular ps fluid" was fine. Many comments led me to believe I need nothing special for the D2.
Is this accurate? I used Walmarts supertech power steering fluid.
Any input is appreciated as I wont be installing the replacement until Thursday evening.
