Power Steering Maintenance Trubles
I'm almost 2 months into my ownership of my first disco 2 and was continuing down the path of sorting all the little things out, so I thought.
My goal today was to change the oil and replace the power steering hoses from the reservoir to the pump and flush the system. Well the oil change went off without a hitch. But not so much for the PS lines.
First issue is the fan clutch nut will not budge. Wail on the wrench and the pulley slips on the belt. ****!!! Well, do this without being able to remove the fan. What a pain in the *** this turned out to be. Finally, I managed to loosen the clamp for the supply hose and remove it only to realize the return hose securing bolt was torqued by king kong. I have not successfully broke it loose either. The pressure hose came loose with a lot of persuasion. Now I notice that the oring is hard and brittle.
Questions:
How do I remove fan clutch from the water pump? Is there a hack to retain the pulley while wailing on the wrench attached to the nut?
Does anyone know the dimensions of the oring on the end of the hose I've circled in the attached picture? Should I just order it from a vendor rather than trying to get one from the hardware store?

You can borrow a fan holding tool from Oreilly or Advance. Hopefully its not siezed on their. I recommend spraying it with some Kroil. I have run in to several where neversieze was not used on the waterpump boss threads. A worst case scenario hack you can clamp vise grips on the pulley. On the o-ring just go to the local ace hardware and get one that fits or the local auto parts store and get the assortment.
Looks like I have spelling troubles also.
Thanks. Didn't realize that there was a tool for the water pump pulley. I'll do that first thing in the morning.
I also just needed the confirmation that there is an off-the-shelf solution. I'm more familiar with toyotas which everyone says they wont run if the parts didn't originate in a toyota factory.

My favorite method to hold pulleys is to use an old belt and tuck it under in the direction of turning. It's amazing what we can learn on-line, and those old belts are really strong. It keeps getting tighter as you turn and works even on the crank shaft.
I had trouble with mine. I had bought the “proper” 36mm wrench from a UK LR parts supplier. It’s quite a thin wrench and works great once the nut has broken free. I was hitting the wrench pretty good with a heavy enough hammer but couldn’t break it free. The thin wrench flexes too much and would absorb all the impact (diagnosed by Best 4x4). I managed to get a heavy 12” adjustable wrench on and the hammer on the wrench broke it free. I now have a regular 36mm combination wrench, but I haven’t had a chance to try it yet.
That will my next option if the rented tool proves to not be useful.
Yeah I normally just use the 36MM open end wrench I got from Northern Tools. I used to go thru so many of those thin cheap ones and forget renting them as they're all worn out and will either just slip or chew away at your fan clutch.
