Default Power Steering Pump Dowel

Hi all,

I recently noticed that my serpentine belt was missing a rib. Seems the power steering pump pulley was coming out a bit. I was able to knock it back in line with a hammer, which helped for about 2 minutes. I ended up replacing the pump, and I decided to see if I could rebuild the old one. As I was taking apart the old pump, I noticed that the small dowel that goes into the indent of the shaft looked a little sheared. If anyone is familiar with rebuilding these pumps, can you tell me if that dowel should be symmetrical on both ends? If yes, does anyone know where I can get a new one?

Thanks!
Jamie

Yeah, that one looks weird, should be the same on both ends. Doubt you can buy that exact pin, but McMaster Carr may have one close enough to work.

Yea. It definitely isn't supposed to look like that. I have been searching all over for a exploded view of the PAS pump to no avail. I did measure the dowel, and it is a double taper, .157" diameter and .365" length. Pretty sure when you take wear into account, it is a M4x10 dowel pin. I might just need to buy that size and figure out how to make the tapers.

After really looking at the internals tonight, I am pretty sure that the only function of this dowel is to spin the "propeller" with the shaft. It doesn't hold the shaft in. I think the shaft is held in by the bearing only.

Per my post above, if anyone is in need of this dowel, it's 4mmx10mm, or a M4x10 dowel. I never could find the double taper, but my plan was to attach it to my drill and file the taper on both ends.

I think I'm going to reuse it. The pump will be a spare anyway.
