power steering went out--'03 Discovery
I just did this repair. You can sort of encourage the pump off while the fan is still on but good luck getting it to go back on. It makes it 1000 times easier if you pull the fan off. Then you have to take the 3 or 4 bolts off of the metal assembly that the pump slides into. The whole assembly will then slide forward off of the stud. If you have ACE, pull that pump off and stick it to the side so you can get to the bolts. Also pull off the pully from the PAS pump to allow you easier access to the bolts on the metal housing that the pump is in. PM me your email if you want and I will send you pics from RAVE that will help. Or even better yet download the rave manual and it will show you pics of how everything comes apart. Two pieces of advice on this repair, one is to make sure to use BLUE thread lock on the pully bolts and the second is to ditch the crimp clamp that holds on the low pressure tube to the bottom of the PAS pump in favor of a 1 1/8 inch hose clamp.
I remember another thing that you should do. BEFORE you put the new PAS pump on be sure to check the four allen head bolts that hold it together and make sure that they are tight. I did not check mine and after i had everything put back together and fluid in the tank it started leaking like a sieve. So i got to take everything back off, pull the pump apart, seal it with some high temp gasket sealer, put the pump back together with some blue thread lock on the bolts, and reinstall everything. I didn;t check the bolts that hold the pump together before i put it in and they were not even finger tight from the factory. At least now i can change the PAS pump on a disco 2 in like 30 min now

good forum, but dont replace pump as there is not much in there to wear out.i rebuilt my pump as the pulley was tracking forward and snapping serpentine belt,i put new high speed bearing in there 6 dollars. seal 2 dollars any bearing seller can match old one,and high temp silicon to reseal, i also had a circlip cut into shaft to stop bearing ever moving from shaft and breaking drive belt[ poor design fault]i now have a better pump than a new one at a fraction of the cost. and u dont need to take fan off u just turn it a little
I just replaced the power steering pump on my 2004 SE and agree with Greenwade. The whole process would have been a lot easier if the fan had been removed. I think you need a special tool to remove the fan. I tried to put the low pressure hose on the pump first, but that made trying to hold the pump in place while sliding on to the stud impossible.
