Default Pressure Testing Block and Heads?

Hey everyone,

I finally started on my rebuild. My poor girl kicked the bucked a few months ago on a camping trip.

I am at the part where I can start taken off the rocker assembly for the heads to be pulled off.

However I am trying to understand if this is where I should do the pressure test on on each cylinder or do I just pull the heads off and pressure test the block on its own?

Can anyone point me to some info on the best way to go about pressure testing without sending it out to a machine shop.

Thanks!

I probably would just do a compression test on each cylinder and see what the results are and then go from there. You can whip up some home brew cylinder pressure testers, check yewtube.

Are you just trying to figure out where the HG blew, assuming that is what happened on your camping trip?

My original post a few months ago is here - explains what happened.

My goal with the pressure test is to figure out if I am dealing with a cracked block or if it was just a head gasket.

Taken her apart I was amazed how lose some of those bolts felt so I'm hoping its a gasket thing. But I am ready for it being worse.

Is there a way to leave the block in the Disco with the heads and front cover still on and pressure test that way?

I have seen a video where one took the spark plugs out and tested through there.

Would that be the way to go or will that only test the cylinders and not the water jacket around the block?

Thanks!
