Default PSA: Carry an extra Crank Position Sensor!

It's 30 degrees, my disco has yet to heat up inside. I just got my header install finished, I'm checking it out. I need a new gasket, but that's not the point right now. I'm cruising along, she sounds great. Doing my second WOT test. That's wierd, I felt a definite power increase on the first pull. Wait, I'm slowing down. Sh*t, engines dead. Pull over, no power steering, no power brakes, tiny median. I'm stopped. Try to start it again, nothing. Key off, one more try. She starts for a second, then sputters. Give it some throttle... Maybe... Nope, dead again. Try again, just cranks. Hop out, look around, can't see anything. Hop back in, crank, tach isn't moving. Crank position sensor.

I've got a parts truck I've been meaning to pull the CPS off of for months just to keep in the glove box, but I never did. Now I'm stuck waiting on a ride in the cold. This is a fair warning. If you've been putting off buying an extra, don't.

Thanks for that. I've got a brand new spare in my garage at home. I'll throw it in the truck from now on.

You're welcome! Hopefully you never find this helpful on the side of the road.

Default Practice

The CKP sensor is the most important sensor on the vehicle and without its signal the engine will not run.
Have thought of picking up a new one to install as PM and practice, keeping old one for a spare. Not something I'd be wanting to do for the first time on dark side of road.

Yep my Kalahari has 224K on it, and I doubt it's cruising around on the original, but after buying it I stopped by Auto Zone and got one for 60.00 (40.00 minus my 20.00 reward $$). You'd be happy to know the "Duralast" branded box actually contains a genuine Bosch sensor!

Yep, definitely wouldn't be fun in the dark and cold with a hot engine and exhaust 20 inches off the 4 lane, especially for the first time.

Well Auto Zone here I come for my new extra!

Quick fix, dump water on it. It cools down enough to start and move to a safer location.

Luckily, we've got roadside assistance on our insurance. The tow truck came this morning and hauled ot to our driveway and im working on it now. Any tricks to getting the plug unplugged?

We need to make a list of parts needed to keep in your truck:
CPS
flexible driveshaft coupling
brake switch

Anything else?
